So what happens when you weigh a little birdie in a cage ?
1. What happens when the bird is at rest?
2. What happens when the bird in flight in the cage?
What if the bird was in a closed jar in both of the above cases?

what happens? nothing really. whoever it is, will just continue looking at some numbers on the weighing scale :P
how you be?
In 1 & 2, the bird is alive. In the closed jar, its dead meat :-)
pfft!
At least verify my argument..
In a closed jar or otherwise... I would have said that the weight would reduce when the bird is in flight inside the cage/jar as opposed to when not in flight. but unfortunately the place that i got the question from says that the weight changes only when the bird flies away! then i googled the law of conservation of mass.. and the definition of a closed system?
yet, i am not convinced that the weight doesn't change... my argument is as follows. is the answer dependent on the measuring scale?
- if you measure using the normal scale one uses to weigh oneself.. the mass is proportional to the pressure exerted by the body on the scale. P=Force/Area=mass*g/Area and is then calibrated accordingly.
(is this how weighing scales work in the first place?)
- if this is the case, the flying is holding itself int he air against gravity. hence it exerts no pressure on the scale (is this statement correct or is there some equal opposite pressure exerted by the bird on the scale, in a closed system?)
Thanks for enlightening us Miss Einstein. or should I say Newton?
v funny!
I'm wrong. :(
why am i unable to visualise this equal and opposite force funda here. I must go back to school again.
send me the link - so i can clarify for myself, and then for you, perhaps?

The first link "a most unlikely animal behaviourist". page 16. search for bottle. it was just a curiosity and he doesnt give explanations. my sis has a theory- the equal and opp force one- although i dont entirely get it.
Apsu should stick with bio and not physics :-)
@anonymous
oh yea? im not putting it the right way then.
if you really knew apsu, she is usually more right with her fundas in physics than biology.
Yeah, I agree with you. Apsu is wasting her time with some "cell" study while forgetting the bigger "chemistry" picture.
Would you mind saying a Hi on my humble behalf to your sis ;-)
sure i'll say anonymous said hi to her very humbly. is this not meaningless? why even talk such nonsense or prove you know the association between apsu and the cell? fyi, the associations are quite outdated.
i see it like this...
if you knew both of us all so well, there is no reason to stay anonymous. if you don't, there is no reason to pretend you know us so well.
oh and not to mention, it would help if you can give an answer and justify it. esp. since you seem to know so much and also have an opinion on who shd stick with what subjects of specialisation.
You are so hot headed and sweet @ heart at the same time...
To tell you the truth, I do not know Apsu nor SS other than what I had inferred from the net :-)
But be assured I have no evil designs or intentions and am just harmlessly flirting? with a smart girl whom I find interesting online. Hopefully my comments drive you into rage, irritation and bewilderment and that makes your reply / posts more vivid and interesting...
We all need something to relax, to look forward to and for me, its poking (harmless) fun at you that helps me spend few minutes a day in a light hearted manner.
What I like about you is your spontaneity. You match me step for step :-)
You are a good pal to know online.
Hi Swarna,
I guess it's time we said goodbye. I enjoyed reading your blogs and "may" continue to read them in future too, but I will stop sending comments to your blogs (as Anon or anybody else). You did not start writing Blogs because of me, nor should you stop now because of an ass**** like me.
I do not want to have a fixation with your blog and I hope you have not developed a dependency on my comments, which is exactly what must be avoided. People should interact with real people in flesh and blood and not with some online entity (which is my fault in the 1st place anyway).
Without much ranting & raving, wishing you all the best in your life Swarna. You are good at heart. Strive to remain so. In the end, all that finally matters is Integrity and Dignity.
Adios amigo. Vaya con dios.
