Can poverty be eradicated?

With the UN going ga-ga about poverty and AIDS eradication, I can't help but wonder how they decide on who is poor and who is not. I know they must have well defined notions about them all. But honestly, how many of the UN decision making staff actually live with the poor? How many of them try to understand the poor rather than try to psychoanalyze their minds like they are experimental mice willing to do anything to get out of their misery.

With due respect to their efforts, especially individual efforts, sincere as they maybe, collectively they seem have an air of political motives, with bureaucracy woven around their propaganda, just as most other 'humanitarian' efforts do. I don't have any prejudices against the UN except that I think that the organization is not as autonomous as it ideally should be. And I suspect that this is more a widely accepted fact than my prejudice. But this fact has been put away for now because when we talk about eradication of 'world' poverty, does having a political motive really affect anything?

But then again, all major wars in history have been fought over territory or resources. The stronger powers amass the wealth and resources of the poor. So when it all boils down to money and power, will poverty eradication as goal set by the UN help the needy? Would this propaganda be in the best interest of all nations? I am not just questioning the feasibility of the target which I anyway think is impossible to achieve unless the UN, in an attempt to achieve its target, decides to mildly modify the definition of the word 'poverty' to be far less inclusive. From a dollar a day to 25 cents a day! ;) I am actually questioning the basic premise behind such a goal. Is poverty eradication the right solution? To right question?
